Terms & Conditions
The statistics on homelessness were sourced from national charities for the purposes of the materials in this site. They represent a snapshot in time, and are subject to change. Up to the minute statistics can be found by visiting national organisations' websites. Please be advised that some sections of these resources may be of a sensitive nature for some children, (eg. addiction): teachers use these materials entirely at their own risk, please check through the materials you wish to use in advance if you are at all concerned that homelessness and its related problems might be an uncomfortable subject for your pupils.
If as a result of your class activity or discussions, the subject of approaching homeless people comes up, please advise pupils not to do this, for their own safety. This does not mean that homeless people are dangerous, or that pupils should not acknowledge their presence, but it is sensible to exercise caution if they are not accompanied by an adult.
Similarly, please advise pupils that if they wish to give money to a homeless person, they should do so through a homelessness charity rather than directly to the person in need. If they want to help that particular individual, and they are with an adult, it may be possible to speak to the person and find out whether you could buy them a sandwich or a cup of coffee instead.
Should you be concerned generally about any pupil at risk of homelessness, please refer them to the specialist help contacts provided in the Thinking of Running Away from Home leaflet, available on this site. WNHT cannot be held responsible for the actions or responses of any individual.
Photographs and images that appear on this site are for graphical/illustrative purposes only and are in no way linked to the text they accompany.
As well as some fictitious narratives, this site features 'real-life accounts' from homeless or formerly homeless people. Their names have been changed to protect their privacy. Please respect them.
